Go With The Flow
A Road Trip Down the Mississippi River
|
The word Mississippi comes
from the Algonquin misezibi meaning "water from all
over," or "great water."
If the rivers were being named
today, the Mississippi River would be named the Missouri River
and not vice versa, since the Missouri is by far the longer.
|
The Mississippi River cuts through our nation's heartland
and soul. The stories of Mark Twain and the music of Showboat
are ingrained in our modern day culture. The wedding of our good
friends Ted and Lydia in Chicago provides us the perfect excuse
to waltz along with Old Man River, the Father of Waters. We'll
spend a week doing what Mark Twain would have done if he'd had
a driver's license: tour the Great River Road.
Forming a single route from head to toe along the Mississippi,
the Great River Road (commonly abbreviated as GRR) was formed
in 1938 from federal, state and local highways and roads. Highlighting
the ten states that boarder the river, the GRR showcases vast
farmlands, meadows, swamps, forests and bluffs, as well as enough
industry to guide your way as you travel from smokestack to smokestack.
While the large urban centers along the river compete with
those on the east and west coasts, and there has been huge development
of the casino industry, a majority of the river has been spared
development as it meanders along--a stark contrast to today's
desire for the four-lane fast and furious.
