FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 22, 2002, 2:30 p.m. Barnes Place Virus AlertBARNES PLACE (ATLANTA, GA) -- A computer from which e-mail is generated to Director of Ambiance and Entertainment Timothy State is contaminated with a virus, reported Earthlink Tech Support just a few minutes ago. The culprit computer has the incorrect e-mail address for Tim State listed in their address book as timstate@barnesplace.com. The correct address for State is tim.state@barnesplace.com. State received two bounced messages that appear to have been sent by him, only the "reply to" address is not a valid address. All e-mails to the domain BarnesPlace.com which are not valid automatically bounce to State's account, which is how he made the discovery. After getting a less than adequate automated response from Earthlink's Abuse (Yes, our automatic system determines a problem, but we can't really help you), he picked up the phone to contact Tech Support. After researching the situation, Tech Support indicated that this problem is consistent with a virus known as "KLEZ", and these e-mails are being generated by a computer where the user has the incorrect address saved for State. Recipients of this e-mail should check their address book to see if they have State's address listed incorrectly. If it is listed as timstate@barnesplace.com, you should visit http://www.norton.com and search for KLEZ to download a program which can remove this virus from your computer should you have it. Then you should correct State's address in your address book. Barnes Place is on a Macintosh system is not generally susceptible to the woes of the Windows-based world. --END-- |
