    Not for the Haves

We’ve been looking to host a party here in the new digs. A big shin-dig extravaganza sort-of affair. However, we live east of Sheridan Road. Sheridan Road, running parallel about a half-mile from the Lake Michigan Shore, is the defining line. The railroad tracks, if you will, delineating the Haves from the Have-a-lots. No street parking is allowed on any street east of Sheridan Road, and with a city parking sticker required to park at the beach, it helps to keep this public beach, essentially private for the Haves.

Generally, prohibition of street parking causes no inconvenience. Until we want to throw that big shin-dig of an extravaganza. I called the City today to ask how this is handled. Certainly, people who live east of Sheridan Road entertain from time-to-time. And certainly they need parking.

I was told exceptions could be made, but we would first have to communicate all the details of the event with the City, which would get clearance from the police department, and provide instruction on where guests could park.

It is curious that in the Republican bubble we live in, that we must get approval for parking—and thus a party—from the City. That’s my kind of Republican Less-is-More Government. All in the name of keeping the Nots from mingling on a beach with the Haves.
